Travel Restrictions: Out-of-State Students & Vacations

Student LifeStudent Travel

Mount Saint Mary College cannot limit student travel, but the college will suggest that students remain on campus for weekends and holidays. Resident students must notify their RA before leaving campus for the weekend. Upon return, students will fill out a screening form. Students coming to campus from states that have travel restrictions will be contacted by Residence Life and will be quarantined for the required time as outlined by New York State.

Out-of-State Students, High Risk States, and Quarantine

The governor of New York recently imposed some travel restrictions to and from certain high risk states. The list of impacted states will be updated frequently and can be found on the Department of Health website. If you are a student hailing from one of these states, you will be required to serve a 14-day quarantine before attending classes in person and moving into your residence hall. If a state falls below the NYS threshold for “high risk,” it is removed from this list. Should your state not be on this list at the time of move-in, you will not be required to quarantine.

If your state is on the list at the time of move-in, you will be required to quarantine and have two options:

  • Arrive in New York or a safe state 14 days prior to your scheduled move-in day and quarantine in that state, with family or friends, for the 14 days. A safe state is any state not on the New York State travel advisory list. If you choose this option, we would ask for details on when you are arriving, where you are quarantining, and with whom you are quarantining.
  • Arrive in New York on your scheduled move-in day and quarantine for 14 days on campus, in Guzman Hall. If you choose this option, when you arrive on campus, you will move into a suite with your own bathroom in Guzman Hall. Meals will be delivered and we will assist you in working with your professors to take your classes remotely/virtually during the quarantine period. Once your 14 day quarantine period is over, we will assist you in moving into your fall room assignment.

Please note that these are the current options and subject to change prior to opening. We encourage you to discuss your options with your family and let us know if you have any questions. Again, although your state could be removed from the list before your date of arrival, please let us know which option you would like to choose. Email Amy Weit at Amy.Weit@msmc.edu

Vacations, High Risk States, and Quarantine

The governor of New York recently imposed travel restrictions for high risk COVID-19 states. Anyone who has been in one of these states must quarantine for 14 days before being allowed on the Mount campus. If you have been to one of these states within the 14 days before your return date to campus, you must quarantine in New York or another state not on the high risk list before returning to campus. Please be aware of this while planning vacations.

The list of impacted states is being updated frequently and can be found on the Department of Health website. This list is based on a seven day rolling average of positive tests in excess of 10 percent, or the number of positive cases exceeding 10 per 100,000 residents
